I had never noticed before, but apparently pretty much any clock you see with Roman numerals uses IIII instead of IV to represent the 4. Interesting.There are some nice theories as to why here, but nothing conclusive. Personally, I like the theory of aesthetic balance. If you were to divide the face vertically from 12 to 6, it's basically symetrical as far as the weight of the numbers (IIII directly across from VIII). There are some other interesting theories posted on that site as well.
It just amazes me that I had never noticed this until today. Interesting.
This was interesting. I will have to keep a look out to see if they are like that in Canada.
